Unauthorized Work

Goal:

For each hourly or salaried, non-exempt employee to know and follow their assigned work schedule.  For supervisors to be aware of any and all timed worked and to equip supervisors to address unapproved or unauthorized work through administrative employee discipline. 

Eligible:

Hourly or salaried, non-exempt employees

Ineligible:

Exempt employees

Process:

Hours worked by an employee in an hourly or salaried, non-exempt status without the employer's permission or contrary to the employer's instructions must be considered as hours worked for payroll and overtime calculation purposes. It is important for each employee to understand and to follow their authorized work schedule. Unrecorded hours worked during a workweek by an employee at the job site or at their home must be counted as hours worked.

The supervisor should advise such an employee that performing unauthorized work could result in disciplinary action. Each supervisor must enforce the no-work rule and may not unjustly benefit from work performed without their knowledge Each department must have adequate internal controls which provide means of reviewing and evaluating the use of overtime.
